Picture the scene: three rock legends hit the stage for an all-star cover of The Beatles’ “Come Together.” But what happened next tore the song’s meaning to shreds as the one-time supergroup dissolved into pure chaos, gobsmacking the audience with their on-stage mayhem while spawning a moment of internet comedy gold!
Liam Gallagher found himself at the center of this mess when his 2017 concert with The Foo Fighters, and added special guest Joe Perry (founding member and guitarist of Aerosmith), came crashing down before the audience’s eyes. Luckily for us, a member of the crowd filmed every second of it, which Music Man readers can check out in the viral video below…
Racking up more than 525,000 views to date, this clip brings rock ‘n’ roll recklessness straight back into fashion. A hoodie-wearing Liam Gallagher takes the mic as The Foo Fighters and Joe Perry form a live backing band. As The Beatles’ bluesy riff is let loose, Liam sings its first lines in his iconic voice but soon stumbles into disaster: he’s forgotten the words.
Messing up the first verse, Liam sings the chorus lyric, cutting it short when he realizes it’s not even time for the chorus to hit yet. Then, he picks up a comedically large lyric sheet from the stage floor, holding it in front of him for the second verse, trying his best to keep the tune intact.
As a guitar solo plays out, Liam quits the mic, edging towards the audience to pick a fan out of the crowd. A female fan climbs up on stage to sing into the same mic as Liam, the crowd cheering her confidence to share the stage with such a living legend of the rock scene.
But then, Liam practically abandons her on stage, giving her full rein of the track and letting her close the song herself as he crowdsurfs through the hectic audience.
All this has left fans wondering: what on Earth went wrong? According to internet legend, Liam obviously got it in his mind that the band were about to perform “I Am The Walrus,” not “Come Together.”
We can’t truly fault Liam for getting his songs mixed up. The Oasis frontman treated fans to a myriad of “I Am The Walrus” covers during Oasis’ 90s/00s heyday (one of which you can check out above!), so it wouldn’t seem too out of the ordinary to recreate the moment for this 2017 supergroup gig.
Despite the set completely falling apart, fans online are spreading nothing but absolute love for Liam Gallagher. As one top commenter wrote, “Liam p****d off playing a Beatles tune with the Foo Fighters, without knowing s**t about the lyrics, gets a girl from the crowd to sing with him and then just jumps and surfs in the sea of souls, pure rock n roll,” another fan backed up the mood, writing: “You might be cool but you ain’t Liam Gallagher in a zipped up hooded parka, shorts, Adidas trainers singing a Beatles song backed by the Foo Fighters and Joe Perry cool.”
