Guest judge Keke Palmer was not ready for this! American Idol unearthed 9-year-old Keke’s adorable American Juniors dance audition in a special surprise for her. Keke just about had kittens when the audition came on, making for a side-splitting and heartwarming throwback. It showed young Keke throwing down some moves to Earth, Wind & Fire’s “Let’s Groove,” complete with some amazing fashion choices. The audition was from 2003, but somehow it seems like it was from so long ago – no doubt the song choice helped.
The audition also gave viewers some insights into young Keke’s hopes and dreams. She said that if she won, she planned to “Get a house, give some money to my parents for what they did to me in my life, and then I’m going to help them with their taxes.” Clearly, she had her head on right even at that young age! The Music Man has to say, apart from the adorable interview and performance, the best part of the segment was seeing Keke’s flabbergasted reaction, which was super entertaining.
American Idol uploaded Keke’s audition reaction to YouTube on March 17, 2026, where it hit 203,000 views in two weeks. Viewers loved to see the surprise segment and added comments such as “That was soooooo freaking cute and hilarious. She definitely was destined to be a star. Her parents did a GREAT job!!!” and “She hasn’t changed. Same personality and STILL wise beyond her years. That was awesome to see.”
The American Idol segment isn’t the only time Keke dropped an epic throwback. The Illinois star impressed with her take on Usher’s late ‘90s hit “You Make Me Wanna” at the BET Awards in 2024. She performed the song with a hectic dance routine with a stacked lineup of backup dancers while delivering a smooth R&B vocal. And the best part? It was performed in front of Usher himself, who was absolutely stoked to see it.
The Music Man readers may recall that Keke appeared as a guest judge for two episodes on American Idol recently, on March 16 and March 23, 2026. On her second appearance, she also hit the stage to perform her new song “All They Type”.
Keke was a big hit among Idol fans, who appreciated her energetic and passionate appearances on the show. Keke’s run on the show was so popular that some fans even called for her to replace Carrie Underwood as a permanent judge on the show, as reported by outlets such as TV Insider and The U.S. Sun. While Keke was definitely super amazing as a guest judge, she’s more of an actress than a singer, and hasn’t ever had a major hit single or album.
Given that all three of the sitting American Idol judges were major, multi-Platinum hitmakers over many years, it’s pretty hard to see them getting knocked off by anyone who isn’t also at that level of commercial prowess as a musical artist.
