Katy Perry Is Iconic In This Spellbinding 2024 MTV Video Music Awards Performance That Quickly Racked Up Eight Million Views

You know when Katy Perry plays the MTV Video Music Awards, you’re in for a real show-stopper! The pop icon kicked out all the jams for her 2024 VMAs performance, opening the set with “Dark Horse” while suspended halfway to the roof with invisible wires, looking like an angel. She eventually made her way back to earth, then hit the crowd with a knockout medley featuring songs like “I Kissed a Girl,” “California Gurls,” and “Teenage Dream,” with a new eye-catching production for each song.

Perry just has that effortless charisma and can own the stage like no one else. Needless to say, all her vocals were totally on point as well. If you look at the most replayed section in the video, it’s “I’m His, He’s Mine,” which featured Doechii. This isn’t surprising as the two stars really put on a spicy performance for that section. It also won’t surprise The Music Man readers to hear that after MTV uploaded her set on September 12, it instantly went viral, racking up eight million views.

Apart from Lady Gaga, there’s probably no other modern pop star who can match the spectacle of a Katy Perry performance. Fans agreed and came out strong below the video, adding comments such as “That Entrance! She nailed every second of this performance, very proud of her! ‘ET’ just blew my mind” and “First with the Super Bowl, and now the VMAs nearly 10 years later, Miss Perry knows how to PERFORM.”

The nearly 10-minute set was such a triumphant showcase and retrospective for Perry’s career. The pop icon was performing at the VMAs as part of the promo cycle for her seventh studio album, 143, which came out later in the same month. While it featured many of her classic singles, the set was also a successful showcase for her new music, such as the hit performance of “I’m His, He’s Mine.” Another recent live cut from Perry is when she sang “Roar” at the 2023 Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle.

Perry’s VMAs appearance went down a treat with critics, and she drew worldwide headline coverage after crushing the set. The night was also notable for Perry as she received the Video Vanguard Award, which is given for “profound impact” and “outstanding contributions” to music videos and pop culture. Perry is in some real fine company among recipients of the award, as past winners include some of our favourites here at The Music Man, such as The Beatles, David Bowie, and The Rolling Stones.
