When Jennifer Hudson challenged John Legend to write a song about anything, what happened next was both hilarious and touching. When Legend dropped into the Jennifer Hudson Show on November 26, 2024, she quizzed him about his songwriting abilities and then presented an Instagram snap of his wife Chrissy Teigen kissing an enormous fish to challenge his lyrical skills. Without any hesitation, the Ohio star began a chord progression and opened with the line “Chrissy, oh, why are you kissing a fishy?”
He then vamped on this theme and turned it into an R&B song about himself sitting alone at home while Chrissy was out kissing the fish. I don’t have to tell The Music Man readers that Legend is a real charmer, and the ladies in the audience were really loving his impromptu smooth R&B tune. The crowd loved it even more when J. Hud suggested they perform a duet, and the two stars then sang a gorgeous version of Legend’s romantic hit “Ordinary People”.
J.Hud kicked off the Jennifer Hudson Show in 2022 and has already hosted a number of big-name guests in the two years since. Fans really loved seeing her photo challenge and duet with Legend last month, and added comments such as “I love me some John Legend, such a remarkable person, and that voice” and “Now, that’s real, unadulterated talent. Two beautiful and kind people. Much love for both of you!”

Given their clear chemistry as duet partners, it might not surprise The Music Man readers to hear that Legend has previously appeared on the Jennifer Hudson Show. The R&B star dropped in on the 100th episode of the show in February 2023 to sing a duet with J. Hud on Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge over Troubled Water.”
Legend dropped “Ordinary People” on April 7, 2005, as the second single from his debut studio album Get Lifted. He co-wrote and co-produced the song with Black Eyed Peas star Will.i.am. Their collaboration was a fruitful one, as the song became a critical and commercial success. Upon its initial release, “Ordinary People” only just scraped into the top 30 in the US and UK. However, it eventually became a sleeper hit, going Platinum in the UK and double Platinum in the US. The song also picked up a Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, as well as nominations for Song of the Year and Best R&B Song.
