Teddy Swims’ breakout single “Lose Control” got taken to a whole new level onstage thanks to Jesse Hampton’s sublime guitar playing. Swims rocked the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee on November 19, 2023, and delivered a very special version of “Lose Control.” The studio version is a tightly written Southern soul tune, but when he hit the stage, the American singer-songwriter really let his band go to town on the number.
Swim introduced guitarist Jesse Hampton “as the most consistent thing in my life” and then the axeman delivered a sublime melodic guitar solo, completely changing up the intro of the song in the process. The band then delivered a lush arrangement of “Lose Control,” with Swim performing the gravelly vocal with a whole lot of passion and charm. The band’s other guitarist Addy Maxwell wasn’t gonna be left out of the fun, and in the bridge he delivered a show-stopping solo with a ton of swag.
Swims uploaded the fresh live take of “Lose Control” on March 5, 2024, and the video has already drawn 5.2 million views. Fans were enamoured with what Swims and his band delivered on the night, and added comments such as “This performance is pure magic. Teddy’s voice and the phenomenal guitar work create an unforgettable experience. This isn’t just music; it’s a soulful journey” and “It’s so refreshing to hear someone with true natural talent sing with such skill and passion.”
Another Swims performance that highlights his amazing vocals and the guitar work of Hampton is their live studio session of the 1981 hit “Tennessee Whiskey.” Chris Stapleton and Justin Timberlake took the song back into the public consciousness with their viral duet on it at the Country Music Association Awards in 2015. Swims’ take on “Tennessee Whiskey” was also quite the hit, attracting 55 million views on YouTube.
Teddy Swims was patiently chipping away at the charts with a series of singles from 2019 onwards, before suddenly gaining an overnight breakout success with “Lose Control,” which dropped on June 23, 2023.
The Music Man readers might be interested to know that “Lose Control” was Swims’ first charting single on the Billboard Hot 100, where after debuting at 99 it eventually climbed all the way to number one. The soul number was also popular in Europe, topping the charts in Belgium, Iceland, Switzerland, and Luxembourg. “Lose Control” also helped Swims’ debut album I’ve Tried Everything but Therapy (Part 1) to crack the top 20 in the US.
