Throwback to the American Idol audition which launched Jennifer Hudson’s career

Soul singer Jennifer Hudson ranks among the living greats of her genre. A Grammy Award-winning artist, an Oscar-winning actress, and an award-winning TV chat show host, Jennifer’s A-list career knows practically no bounds. But you might be surprised at where it all began…

We’ve unearthed a flashback clip of J-Hud’s very first appearance in the celebrity spotlight – her spellbinding audition for American Idol’s third season, which hit TV screens all the way back in 2004. This was the moment that launched her career, transforming her into the star we know and love today. Music Man readers can watch her 29 million-times-viewed audition unfold in the video below.

An excitable, 21-year-old Jennifer Hudson appears on the old-school audition stage, faced by judges Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul, and a golden-era Simon Cowell. It’s revealed that Jennifer had spent her musical career singing on Disney cruise ships, with an unimpressed Randy telling her, arms crossed, that “We’re gonna expect something better than a cruise ship performance, right?” But little did he know…

Jennifer exudes radiant confidence before she even begins singing. And her song of choice could have easily been an instant disaster – the bold and powerful “Share Your Love With Me” by Aretha Franklin. However, even without a backing track to pin her goddess-like vocals down, Jennifer dazzled the judges with her unbelievable rendition.

Deep, rich soul vocals stream from young Jennifer, the judges watching in silence, first unbemused before gazing up in astonishment and awe at her mind-blowing talent. Randy even murmurs “Mmm” like he’s felt the Spirit in a gospel church, before halting her audition to say, “Absolutely brilliant. The best singer I’ve heard so far. Brilliant,” shocking Jennifer Hudson just as much as she’d shocked the judges with her voice.

Before long, Jennifer had earned three out of three Yes votes, sending her straight through to the second round, and making her an instant icon on American TV screens.

But, surprisingly, despite slaying her way right up to the Finals, Jennifer didn’t actually win her series of American Idol, sadly finishing in seventh place. The season’s winner? Fantasia, singer of US #1 single “I Believe,” and R&B chart-toppers, “Truth Is,” “Free Yourself,” and “When I See U.”

Despite missing out on the crown, Jennifer Hudson’s career only blossomed. Two years later, she made her Broadway debut in a 2006 production of Dreamgirls, winning an Oscar and a Grammy for her work on stage and soundtrack. Another two years on, and J-Hud dropped her debut eponymous album, scoring at #2 on the US album charts and launching her career as a solo artist. But, even then, her acting career didn’t get put on hold – the star appearing in “Sex and The City” and “The Secret Life of Bees” that very same year.

In 2018, after another two solo albums and a tapestry of Broadway and screen performances, Jennifer Hudson had the privilege of performing “Amazing Grace” at Aretha Franklin’s funeral; an enigmatic, soulful performance which Music Man readers can revisit above. An oddly full-circle moment, considering it was an Aretha song which won her American Idol audition, Jennifer also paid homage to the late star portraying her in the 2021 biopic, “Respect.”

Now, 21 years on from her American Idol audition, Jennifer is still winning fans’ hearts on her very own daytime talk show, The Jennifer Hudson Show – replacing the disgraced Ellen DeGeneres Show for American TV viewers.

It’s incredible to look back at where it all began – a lowkey stage, a jaw-dropping voice, and a personality brighter than most A-Listers could dream of.

Jennifer Hudson is undeniably one of soul music’s living legends — from that unforgettable American Idol audition to Oscar and Grammy triumphs, her rise is breathtaking.
