The BBC Was Absolutely Not Ready For Jason Derulo’s Cheeky Opera Take On Sir Mix-A-Lot’s 1992 Banger “Baby Got Back”

Jason Derulo proved he could do absolutely anything with this one! When the BBC put the American hitmaker up to singing Sir Mix-a-Lot’s “Baby Got Back” as an opera, nobody was quite ready for what Derulo was about to drop on ‘em. The Florida R&B star kicked things off with a cheeky take on the song’s opening skit, then began a dramatic opera performance to a stately piano backing, where he told the whole world about his love for big behinds, and how he could, in fact, not lie about it.

Derulo quickly got the whole audience and the other guests breaking up with laughter. He was far from done, though, as he upped the ante and took the cover from ballad territory to a fiery conclusion where he showed off his incredible vocal range. The Music Man is confident in saying Derulo’s final, climactic vocal run is absolutely worthy of any famous opera stage all around the world.

Derulo dropped into the BBC on January 10, 2023, for the That’s My Jam cover. The BBC’s upload of the performance has since hit one million views on YouTube. Fans raved about Derulo’s genre-bending chops with comments such as “Never would’ve ever believed if someone told me Jason Derulo can sing opera. That was fantastic” and “Jason got vocals! I usually hate opera but he made me love it. He should really do some Broadway music every now and then because that’s pure talent. It’s a shame to let it go to waste.”

Derulo’s most popular live performance on YouTube is his spicy cut of “Want to Want Me” at the Summertime Ball in London. There seems to be something about heading over the pond to England that makes the Florida singer give his best performances. In the Summertime Ball performance, Derulo shows off his flawless live vocals and plenty of fleet-footed dance moves. There sure ain’t many performers who can deliver that kind of demanding live vocal while dancing as well as he does.

While Derulo’s opera chops would be pretty surprising to most listeners, his serious fans among The Music Man readership probably knew what to expect. After all, Derulo was educated at performing arts schools such as The American Musical and Dramatic Academy. He also had early experience performing in musicals such as Ragtime and Smokey Joe’s Cafe.
