If you were around in 2008, you will more than likely remember James Morrison’s beautiful single ‘Broken Strings’, recorded as a duet with Nelly Furtado. A few weeks ago, meanwhile, Morrison gave an incredibly touching live performance of the track for Magic Radio’s Magic of Christmas show, a rendition made all the more special by the fact he was joined on stage by his daughter Elsie.
Morrison, who is also playing the guitar, starts off the rendition, but it is when Elsie joins in, singing the parts that Furtado sang on the original single, that the performance really takes flight. Her angelic vocals and the sweet, emotional looks shared by the father and daughter duo have prompted viewers from all over the world to fall in love with this magical rendition, which has racked up hundreds of thousands of views on YouTube alone in just a matter of weeks.
Some of these viewers have also taken to the YouTube comment section to show their love for the rendition, with many talking about the emotive memories the song brings back for them. “I was a teen when this song came out, now his kiddo is singing this song with him,” said one fan, whilst another summed up the magic of the performance by saying: “crazy to think when this song was first written his daughter wasn’t even born yet. [..] Truly special to watch.”
Morrison also performed another song at the same event – this time a festive cover of East 17’s Christmas classic ‘Stay Another Day’. Although his daughter Elsie did not join him for this rendition, the performance was still stunning and has also left many viewers around the world feeling emotional.
Our favourite rendition that Morrison gave for the Magic Radio Christmas event this year, however, has to be his duet of ‘Broken Strings’ with his extremely talented daughter Elsie. Not only was the performance itself beautiful and touching, but it was made all the more emotional by the deep father and daughter bond that the pair seemed to share when they were onstage. We can only hope they will be giving more performances together in the future!
