Father and son duo, Jack and Tim, blew the judges away on Britain’s Got Talent with a stunning original song and took home the golden buzzer for their efforts. 12-year-old Jack and 43-year-old Tim rocked out on acoustic guitars and sang gorgeous duet vocals on their song “The Lucky Ones”, which Jack said is “about how lucky we are to have what we have”.
Tim sang the first verse, exhibiting a delicate folk vocal and putting a lot of heart into the words. The big moment came when dad and son sang the chorus together, and hearing their voices join as one simply hit you in the chest. Jack then stole the show with his lead vocal after the chorus, which showcased a wide range and was so sweet and pure.
You could see in the judges’ eyes as they watched the audition that Jack and Tim had won them over. After the applause died down, Simon Cowell didn’t hesitate and said, “Tim, Jack – this says it all” and hit the golden buzzer. Dad and son just about hit the roof and Jack couldn’t hold back his tears as he celebrated with his dad. Cowell went up to congratulate the pair and said, “You are special. What a great song – it reminded me of me and my boy. That was so fantastic, so pure, so great.”
David Walliams said that it made a big impact on him as a father and said, “It was just wonderful to see a father and son with a very special connection do this beautiful performance together.” Jack and Tim later came back with a vengeance in the semi-finals with another original song “Big Wide World.”
After their audition, Alesha Dixon also heaped praise on the duo, saying, “I’m so happy for you. You’re by far the coolest father and son act that we’ve ever had. I can’t wait to hear more and see you in the [live round].” Amanda Holden was also a big fan, saying, “I was a mess throughout the whole thing. It was an amazing golden buzzer.”
The duo’s semi-final number “Big Wide World” was a great showcase for Jack’s guitar playing, as he picked up an electric guitar on the song and rocked everybody’s socks off. The youngster played several lead breaks on his Gibson hollow body as well as a fiery solo.
Jack and Tim breezed through the semi-final and made their way to the final, before eventually placing eighth in the competition overall. The pair have continued playing together since exiting the show, and in 2020 they released their debut EP, Long Way Home. Every year since then, they have released a steady stream of singles, including “The Lucky Ones” and “Simple Days”, both of which have attracted several million streams on Spotify. The duo have also been hitting the live circuit hard and recently announced their first US tour with a full band, which is kicking off in March 2024.
