A homeless man in Santa Monica, California, seized his chance to become a star when he stumbled across a microphone and sound system in the middle of the street.
Merrick Beasley grabbed the mic and, after a quick interview with Sing On Street – the YouTube channel that set up the equipment to let passers-by steal a spontaneous moment of glory – Merrick revealed his hidden talent and a jaw-dropping transformation.
This clip has gone internet-viral, amassing more than 4.6 million views to date. Music Man readers can watch the magic unfold in the video above…
With no rehearsal, no vocal warm-ups, or any idea that he’d be singing before millions of internet strangers, Merrick sways to the backing track intro before shocking the world with his voice.
His song choice is surprising: “End of the Road” by Boyz II Men – an R&B break-up hit from 1992, studded with a pre-chorus which perhaps relates to Merrick’s own down-and-out situation: “When I can’t sleep at night without holding you tight / Girl, each time I try, I just break down and cry / Pain in my head, oh, I’d rather be dead / Spinnin’ around and around.”
But Merrick’s vocals are even more astonishing than his daring song choice. Soft, sweet, and perfectly toned to match the classic R&B vibe, Merrick sings pitch-perfect from his very first line, his glossy voice capturing the heart of Sing On Street’s mission.
As the event explains in its video description, “[There are] many good singers out there. Sadly the competition in the industry is so tough that some just don’t make it because they don’t have the hype or exposure the other does. We’d just like to give you your own stage on the street.”
Merrick was the perfect candidate to bring Sing On Street’s heartwarming mission to life. And, once given the chance to shine, he transformed into a brand new man.
One viewer noticed, “He looked alive as he was singing, like this is what brings him joy,” while another top commenter added, “This man sings from a place of deep pain and lived experience. He works through his trauma, breathes it out – and transforms it into power through his voice. It’s utterly moving. I’m sitting here in Germany, and I can feel every single emotion behind every single word he sings. Raw. Honest. Beautiful.”
