Guitarist and multi-instrumentalist AcousticTrench went viral when he brought his harp along on a woodland walk and played a magical rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” for his rescue dog, Maple.
This video has amassed more than nine million views since reaching YouTube back in 2016, and years later, viewers still find themselves tearing up over this heartwarming moment. But what happened next left AcousticTrench’s multi-million subscriber fanbase absolutely heartbroken.

Maple – a Border Collie, Golden Retriever, and Shetland Sheepdog mixed breed – basks in the dappled sunlight in an autumnal forest clearing as AcousticTrench plucks the soothing melodies of “Hallelujah” on his harp. Maple is perfectly serene as she receives the ultimate serenade from her doting owner and wags her tail gently as AcousticTrench reaches out to stroke her fur after his short-but-sweet rendition ends.
Viewers are utterly spellbound by this magical moment, commenting, “This is basically heaven” and “Maple is the cutest dog to ever touch the face of this planet.”
But, six years after this video was uploaded, AcousticTrench’s fans were sent spiraling in despair.
AcousticTrench uploaded a cover of Louis Armstrong’s “What A Wonderful World” with the title, “Saying Goodbye” – a clip that’s since racked up more than 12.9 million views.
He wrote in the viral video’s description, “Yesterday I had to say goodbye to my best friend. Maple passed away peacefully during the night, while I held her in my arms. We have spent every moment together for over 12 years, doing everything together.”
He revealed, “I adopted her from a rescue shelter and the first time we met she tackled me, leaping into my arms, wagging her tail so hard and with a smiling face full of love. We went on so many adventures together, and she was always there for me with her unconditional love through difficult times. Music helped to soothe and comfort her, especially when she was feeling anxious during thunderstorms and fireworks so I would play for her to help calm her down. She would lay beside me with her head in my lap and listen to the guitar until she fell asleep. I feel so lucky to have had her in my life, the bond we shared is indescribable and my heart is aching.”
AcousticTrench thanked his 2M+ subscribers in a Facebook post, writing, “I feel so very lucky to have had her in my life, I don’t know what I’m going to do without her. Thank you for letting us share some of our moments together with you. I hope Maple has helped bring a smile or some comfort to you over the years, and I take solace in the fact that she will live on through these videos. I love you Maple.”
