Göran Söllscher is a Swedish guitarist who was born in Växjö, Sweden in 1955 and was brought up in Kalmar. Söllscher has been playing the guitar since the age of 7 and continued to extend his musical talent by attending the Malmö Conservatory at the age of 20 (1975-77), and the Royal Conservatory of Copenhagen at the age of 21 (1976-79.)
This performance details Söllscher playing The Beatles’ ‘Eleanor Rigby’, a renowned song that was originally released on the LP Revolver in 1966. The original features Paul McCartney’s voice accompanied by a double string quartet. Söllscher remasters the original by performing the song on a custom-made 11-stringed guitar. When there are more notes and strings to play, you expect some kind of mishap. Yet, Söllscher executes the cover effortlessly and plays a beautiful rendition of a classic song.
During his musical education, he was recognised as a talented musician, particularly throughout Europe. He participated at the ‘Concours International de Guitare’, which translates to ‘International Competition of Guitar’ in Paris in 1978.
After receiving first prize in the competition, Söllscher continued to expand his music career. He performed in orchestras, often as a guest guitarist, and has played alongside some of the best in the world, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London, the Japan Philharmonic in Tokyo, New York’s Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and many more.
They were conducted under the likes of, but not limited to, Sir Alexander Gibson, Woldemar Nelsson, Claudio Abbado and Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos. He has also performed solo in concerts worldwide. Söllscher has a wide skillset, performing anything from the Renaissance period to contemporary music. If you imagine anything from Bach to the Beatles, he has done it.
His career in performing has been vast. While his earlier career tended to be based within Europe, he has since toured in Japan, China, North and South America, and more.
From recording and releasing debuts to touring solo worldwide to becoming a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music to teaching guitar at the University of Lund in Sweden, he has certainly made his imprint on the musical world.
