Two weeks ago, YouTube musician sina-drums pulled a band together for an unmissable Pink Floyd cover that fans are calling “one of the best covers I have ever heard” – a rendition so extraordinary that not even Pink Floyd themselves attempted to recreate their hit single live in quite the same way these youngsters have.
Drummer Sina and her band of twenty-somethings brought their Pink Floyd cover to London’s iconic Abbey Road Studios for a live performance that’s now going viral, amassing more than 885,000 views in a matter of weeks. Music Man readers can watch the magic unfold in the video below…
Here’s the catch: Pink Floyd’s “Money” begins with a ‘cash register loop’ which the band never tried to recreate live. Frontman Roger Waters recorded the sounds of an old cash register, ripping paper and bags of coins, splicing the tape snippets together to craft that legendary intro sequence beat that’s closer to noise than music.
But once Sina’s band enters the studio, they rewrite history in the best possible way. Three of Sina’s bandmates sit in a circle on the floor, surrounded by loop pedals, cash registers, coins, and paper, ready to recreate the abandoned intro live for the very first time. With impeccable timing, the trio perfectly capture Roger’s original cash register beat on their spread of contraptions, before the rest of Sina’s band leap in on the song.
Once a spot-on prog rock groove is laid, Effie Anna’s lead vocals break through the bluesy chords and psychedelic guitar effects, her tones paying pure respect to Pink Floyd’s original, whilst adding personality twists of her own.
A raspy sax solo is cut by a mind-melting guitar jam and disintegration into the oddities of space rock; a sigh of relief from the guitarist as his kaleidoscopic solo fades out into the final, calm verse; the trio of cashiers soon rushing back to their inner circle to wrap up the cover with their live intro loop.
Since reaching YouTube last month, this cover has been blowing the minds of old-school classic rock fans across the world, with more than 2,800 viewers taking to the comments section to reveal their thoughts.
As one fan wrote, “Ageing Floyd fan here… this is bloody marvellous! To see a group of youngsters skilfully reproduce classics like this is fantastic,” another oldie but goldie added, “It really is refreshing to see musicians, who are young enough to be my grandkids, both enjoy and appreciate the classic music I grew up with… and perform it SO well!”
