Ed Sheeran was casually cruising down a London canal when he saw a young woman out jogging. Smiling at the woman, the superstar asks sweetly, “any requests?”. “Could you do ‘Tenerife Sea’?” she replies, prompting Ed to immediately burst into a beautiful rendition of the track. This sweet moment between Ed and one of his fans has already touched the hearts of many listeners around the world, with thousands of people flocking to comment on the musician’s sweet personality and humble nature.
Pulling out her phone to record the event, the young woman was obviously stunned by the pop singer’s impromptu appearance – and who could blame her? When she started out on her run she had no idea she was about to witness something that would see her going viral online. “She will remember this every time she runs this route,” commented one fan on the video, which has racked up hundreds of thousands of views in a matter of days, while many more commented on Ed’s note-perfect rendition.
The young woman – who has been named as Nikki Atkins – has since taken to social media to talk about the encounter, saying “this was so unexpected and so so beautiful” before thanking the singer for his rendition. “This is why we run, girls!” she quipped. Nikki has also been on BBC Breakfast to talk about her experience, describing it as “so random” and “surreal”, and saying that at first she didn’t believe it was the singer himself but rather just a ginger man who looked a bit like Ed.
Many dedicated fans of Ed will know, meanwhile, that this is not the first time the singer has surprised someone with an impromptu performance. Back in 2015, Ed heard 13-year-old busker Sydney singing one of his tracks in a shopping mall. “Should I just roll up?” he asks the cameraman, before giving the teenager the surprise of her life by joining her on stage to harmonize. Sydney later described the moment as the best of her life, a sentiment Music Man fans will no doubt be able to understand.
All in all, these two videos make it very clear that, not only is Ed Sheeran an extremely capable musician who can deliver exceptional performances on the spot, but also that he is a truly kind and genuine person who has not allowed his huge levels of fame to go to his head.
