Fans were blown away after Dua Lipa sang this soul classic with just a hollow body guitar for accompaniment. The popstar sang Etta James’s “I Would Rather Go Blind,” and her soul power was off the charts! Many fans observed that it showcased an entirely different side of her voice and were left begging for more! Lipa sang the 1967 soul staple in a single take in a two-piece studio session with guitarist Ed Seed, who laid down a tasteful hollow body guitar groove.
Lipa began the number with a sonorous low-register vocal with a whole lot of feeling. She was really channeling the soul with this number, and so effortlessly shifted into her high register from the second verse onwards. The Music Man can guarantee that hearing her passionate belting in the second half will give you big-time goosebumps!
Lipa’s “I Would Rather Go Blind” cover was a big hit for the London-born star, as after she uploaded it on January 14, 2017, it blew up to 16 million views. Fans were very impressed and added comments such as “She’s really got the whole package. I love her big pop bangers but I hope she’ll do an album with songs like this. Her voice is gold” and “I would have NEVER guessed she could sing like this from the music I hear of hers on the radio and award shows. I really wish they would showcase it.”
Lipa has done several memorable performances as a duo with her guitarist Ed Seed, who played with her for the first two years of her career. Another great moment from the pair was when Lipa sang Sam Smith’s “I’m Not the Only One” at the iHeartRadio Live Sessions. She really channels the soul for this one, bringing to mind some Amy Winehouse vibes.
Etta James released “I’d Rather Go Blind” in 1967. She first heard the song when she visited her friend Ellington Jordan in prison, and then the pair finished writing it together. However, at the time she credited her contributions to her then-partner, Billy Foster, for tax reasons. “I’d Rather Go Blind” hit the top 10 of the Billboard R&B chart as a B-side to the single “Tell Mama,” and is now known as a classic in soul and blues. It has also become a fan favorite and is currently her second-most streamed song on Spotify, with 339 million streams.
