Damian Salazar, a Buenos Aires-based guitarist, has been named by some as one of the best guitarists in the world. Deep Purple’s Steve Morse even recommended him as one of the top present-day guitarists people should know about. However, this guitarist is not selling out stadiums in a chart-topping rock band, as you might expect from someone garnering such praise. Instead, he is a street musician who stops pedestrians in their tracks with his face-melting guitar solos.
One of his most recent covers to draw in a crowd was Iron Maiden’s ‘Fear Of The Dark’. At The Music Man, we love it when artists make a song their own, and Damian Salazar did just that. With fingers moving at lightning speed, the guitarist transformed Dave Murray’s legato-style guitar work on the original track into something entirely new, with super speed tapping and bending of the strings to get that iconic 70s rock wail out of the instrument.
There has, unsurprisingly, been an enormously enthusiastic response towards Damian’s playing. Not only has he been drawing in crowds on the street and achieving millions of views on his YouTube channel, he has caught the attention of some of the most legendary musicians in the world. In fact, after he posted a cover of a Scorpions’ song online, his performance reached the band, and they were so impressed that they invited him to play with them.
Joining them in their home country of Germany, at Ludwigsburg Castle, Damian lived many a young guitarist’s dream by playing lead guitar with one of his favourite bands. Coming on stage, Damian joined them to play guitar on their classic hit ‘Still Loving You.’ Not only did Damian play alongside them, but, once again, he brought his own flavour to the song and showed that he is talented enough to have his own signature style and bold enough to make classic songs his own.
Here at The Music Man, we love to write about the biggest musicians of the present day and from throughout history, but Damian Salazar’s story just goes to show that the greatest musical talents may not always be found on an arena stage. More often than you might expect, they are found in a local bar or on a street corner, covering the songs they themselves love. Despite appearing on stage with the Scorpions, Damian has returned to his stomping ground of the streets of Buenos Aires. So, keep your ears peeled next time you’re out in town because you never know, you may just stumble across one of the most impressive guitarists of the current day.
