When Taylor Swift’s concerts in Vienna became the target of a planned terrorist attack, her shows there were canceled to keep attendees safe. Naturally, this left a number of disappointed Swifties who had been waiting to go and see her. When Coldplay performed their concert there later that month, they had a plan to try to cheer up any Swifties in attendance. Calling out for any Taylor Swift fans, Chris Martin shocked two young Swifties by inviting them up onto the stage.
Chris invited support act Maggie Rogers out onto the stage, and together, they launched into a cover of Taylor Swift’s ‘Love Story’. Chris took turns singing with Maggie and the two young Swift fans, who looked astonished at the unexpected turn of events. The crowd embraced the tribute, singing their hearts out alongside them. One fan commented on the online video, “As someone who was supposed to go to the Eras Tour in Vienna, I am so deeply touched by this gesture.”
Coldplay continued to honor Taylor’s fans throughout their stay at Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium, incorporating her songs into their set to show support for the fans. They didn’t just stick with Love Story and decided to change it up, selecting various songs from Taylor Swift’s extensive discography. On the third night, Chris Martin spotted a sign held by fans in the crowd that read, “Shake it off with us,” and knew exactly what to do.
Inviting the fans onstage, Chris asked them to join in with a performance of Taylor Swift’s ‘Shake It Off’. The simple version of the song he played at the piano quickly became a rousing rendition when, once again, the audience embraced the experience and began to sing along at the top of their lungs. Once again sharing the microphone with the fans on stage, Chris managed to turn a disappointing and frightening concert cancellation into a moment to remember.
Despite their disappointment over Taylor Swift’s canceled shows, Coldplay’s generosity was able to bring joy to her fans. Coldplay is known for its generosity towards fans, compassion, and optimistic attitude, and that was certainly exemplified here. By covering Taylor’s songs and inviting fans onstage during their shows, they were able to show solidarity during a frightening moment for Vienna’s concertgoers and bring unity and celebration to the shows they played there. While the threat of terror meant that Taylor’s concerts were silenced in Vienna, Coldplay ensured that the fans’ voices were heard loud and clear.
