Kicking off the European leg of their Music of the Spheres World Tour 2024 in Athens, Greece, London indie rock legends Coldplay invited two young fans on stage at the Olympic Stadium for a muddled rendition of the band’s 2019 album-closer, “Everyday Life.”
We love a wholesome singer-brings-fan-on-stage vid here at The Music Man. But this viral Coldplay clip is the polar opposite to bucket-hatted Alex’s iconic set with Dave at Glastonbury 2019, for example, or Foo Fighters pulling up child prodigies for their moment in the spotlight.
Instead, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin (aged 47) is caught fumbling through the chords and lyrics, trying to remember an obscure song he wrote five or six years prior. Playing alone on keyboard, with two fans Elena and Andrea seated beside him, Chris plays a rare bum chord live, and even starts singing his chorus on the wrong note, throwing him off completely. But like a pro, he pulls it back and his chorus ends like the record.
Chris hands the mic to the fangirls to take on the next verse. They clearly aren’t singers, but their attempt is cute as anything, especially after they forget the lyrics and melody as well! They skip to the next chorus, with the lyrics now on their phone and give it their best shot as the crowd screams for them.
This is one embarrassingly patchworked performance, as both singer and sisters grapple through the song, played out-of-tune and out of time yet hilariously wholesome. It’s like watching a bedroom rehearsal by Chris Martin on the Olympic stage, but this stripped-back rendition brings The Music Man back to the heart of music performance; sharing songs and life-long memories with others.
Sisters Elena and Andrea were pulled on stage after Chris spotted their hand-painted sign amongst the audience, reading: “A chronic illness makes Everyday Life difficult but your music makes Everyday Life better.” They revealed they’d come from the hospital to attend Coldplay’s tour-opening gig in Athens, at which Chris Martin looked down and realized, “Oh wow, look at all this medical s***. You’re doing so well to be here, we’re so grateful, thank you for coming!”
In his usual down-to-earth fashion, Chris Martin said to the sisters after seating them beside him, “For the next five minutes, you two are the whole audience here with me. This is how we feel about everybody, I wish I could sit with everybody, but today it’s you guys and thank you for representing the audience.”
This live version of “Everyday Life” has gone viral over the last month, amassing nearly 200k YouTube views since June 2024.
