Cher And David Bowie Join Forces To Sing “Young Americans” Medley In Flashback 1975 TV Performance

How well do you remember 1970s pop? With David Bowie topping the charts with every quickfire album he released, his hits became unparalleled, and almost every song iconic. But in 1975, one legendary TV appearance managed to slip through the cracks, and only now are fans giving it the attention it deserves as it racks up over 3.8 million views on YouTube.

The same year that he released his ninth studio album, “Young Americans,” David Bowie appeared on Cher’s very own TV show, entitled “Cher,” to perform a medley that included his brand new hit, sung with the Goddess of Pop herself. This majestic alignment of superstars is fabulous to behold in all its retroism; a time capsule of 70s pop and early music TV.

“Young Americans” wasn’t the only hit the supersonic duo shared on stage. After kicking off with Bowie’s then-latest single, the pair whirled through mash-up renditions of 12 other songs, including “Blue Moon,” “Only You (And You Alone)” and “Ain’t No Sunshine.”

Bowie’s death may have left fans feeling robbed of his otherworldly creative talent, but this flashback clip truly shows off the best of what Bowie had to offer, both as a vocalist and as a show-stopping performer. Thousands of nostalgic viewers have taken to the comments section to write and like, “It seems impossible that one person could have that much talent. We were indescribably lucky to get to share the planet with him.”

Cher’s bold and unmistakable voice is a stellar balance for Bowie’s equally legendary lines, the stars aged 31 and 28 here respectively. And the pair clearly share the chemistry of pop music, sharing harmonies as well as their hair color and having a laugh on stage through this flawless performance. At one point during the medley, Bowie slides onto his knees while Cher hits some glass-smashing high notes, while, during “Blue Moon,” Bowie leads her into a side-to-side dance before taking full command of the stage for himself in the following hit.

Younger Music Man readers are bound to be shell-shocked by Cher’s grace here; the now-78-year-old Californian singer hardly appearing to have aged a day since this clip (other than her fashion sense), filmed exactly a decade after launching her career in 1965 with her debut album, “All I Really Want To Do.”

This wasn’t the only star-studded medley Cher performed on her TV show. That same year, she performed medleys with The Jackson 5 (check out the incredible clip above!), Elton John, Tina Turner, Stevie Wonder, and more!

David Bowie’s forgotten 1975 TV appearance with Cher is now finally getting the recognition it deserves, celebrating a unique moment of 70s pop culture. Their iconic medley is a testament to their immense talent and charisma, serving as a beautiful snapshot of a vibrant musical era.
