Charlie Puth and Selena Gomez performed a star-packed duet on “We Don’t Talk Anymore”, and the pair sounded out of this world when they sang the song live on the latter’s Revival tour. Gomez, who looked absolutely stunning in a little black dress, told the crowd, “I had one of my best friends come in, and I think you guys know this song maybe.”
Puth then opened the song with the iconic vocal line and Gomez joined her voice with his, creating a duet that sounded heavenly right from the start. The talented New Jersey songwriter then accompanied himself on piano while the band laid down a minimalist groove. Puth and Gomez are two of the finest vocal talents to hit the top of the charts in recent years, and seeing them interact with each other live is really special.
The live duet quickly attracted attention online, and with 320 million views, it is currently the most popular live performance on Puth’s YouTube channel. Gomez truly showcased her talent for commanding the stage, and it’s hard to keep your eyes off her as she prowls around the stage, while also showing plenty of chemistry with Puth. Gomez spiced up the show, projecting a vibe of fluctuating between being warm and cool towards Puth, and at one point, even playfully pushing him away after briefly cozying up to him.
Fans loved to see the pair working off each other onstage, adding comments such as “Selena looks like the extroverted rebel girl and Charlie looks like he’s the shy quiet best friend in love with her” and “Even after all these years, this still remains one of my favourite stage performances.” Another great live duet from Gomez came when she sat in with Coldplay to sing her feature on the band’s song “Let Somebody Go” on The Late Late Show with James Corden.
The studio version of “We Don’t Talk Anymore” was a five times Platinum hit for Puth and Gomez. The Puth-penned song was the source of much speculation in the press about the nature of the pair’s relationship, which has still been hitting headlines as recently as last year. Gomez had broken up with her on-again, off-again boyfriend Justin Bieber when “We Don’t Talk Anymore” was recorded in 2015, which fanned speculation.
Gomez posted a picture of her and Puth on her Instagram at the time, and in response to the speculation, Tweeted “Before it begins, he is a good one. He is MY FRIEND only lol.” Puth confirmed this by Tweeting “She’s just my friend guys lol relax.”
However, in 2018 the singer-songwriter changed his tune in comments to Billboard in relation to his romantic connection with Gomez. “I don’t kiss and tell, but the only way a song like [“We Don’t Talk Anymore”] can come across as real is if there’s something else going on behind the scenes,” he said.
“And that’s what was happening [with Gomez]. Very short-lived, very small, but very impactful. And it really messed me up. I’m trying to put this the best way possible: It wasn’t like I was the only person on her mind. And I think I knew that going in — what I was getting myself into.”
Puth stirred the pot again on March 25, 2023, by Tweeting “‘Attention’ is about what you think it’s about.” He quickly deleted the Tweet, but after such well-worn speculation about the two, there seems to be little doubt about who he is referring to, which is quite intriguing given how pointed the lyrics of “Attention” are.
