American Idol 2026 dark horse challenger Braden Rumfelt shows he’s got the Midas touch singing this ‘90s diva classic, and you might melt when you hear what he did with that iconic Céline Dion key change

American Idol 2026 dark horse challenger Braden Rumfelt showed he’s got the Midas touch singing the ‘90s diva classic “All By Myself,” and what he did with that iconic Céline Dion key change gave viewers big-time goosebumps! The North Carolina talent sure didn’t make it easy on himself by picking such a huge song, but he had the right stuff to make the hit pop. Braden opened the song by showing off a honeyed low register and mid-range, channeling the vibe of the original Eric Carmen version.

However, Braden had a lot more left in the tank. From 0:50 onwards, he shifted gears and started showing more of Céline’s dramatic style. His high run over the key change at that point was just brilliant, and the rest of the song was a total vocal tour de force. The reaction from the crowd said it all. The 22-year-old might not be an outright Idol frontrunner at this point, but The Music Man has to say, the rest of the pack might be feeling nervous after watching a performance like this!

American Idol uploaded Braden’s take on “All By Myself” on April 7, 2026. Viewers gave some major props for this performance and added comments such as “I have four in the running, but after this performance he’s leading for my votes!” and “The more I listen to this, the better it gets. He is an amazing vocalist with so much incredible style. He can sure sell the songs, which are so much more than notes on a page. Braden, you are my winner!”

Braden’s most popular performance to date on American Idol was his version of Rihanna’s “Love on the Brain.” Evidently, the pastor’s son is an expert at taking female vocal hits and making them his own. Braden really leaned into the soul elements of the vocal and delivered an old school Motown-style performance on Idol. There’s something gorgeous about the way he moves languidly in and around the melodies of the song.

Braden Rumfelt is a singer from Murphy, North Carolina. His origins in the Appalachians influenced his style, as he grew up singing bluegrass music and honed his singing skills in church with his pastor dad. The Music Man readers may recall that Braden sang a soulful cut of Little Big Town’s “Girl Crush” for his American Idol audition. He made quite an impression on the judges, with all three voting yes, sending him to the Hollywood round. Braden is still in the running for the 2026 season at the time of writing, having made the cut to the top nine contenders. In the most recent round, he performed Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition.”
