Billy Joel created a super cute moment at his show at Madison Square Garden on June 8, 2024, when he invited his young daughters Della and Remy to rock out on “Don’t Ask Me Why.” The Piano Man brought Della Rose Joel, 8, and Remy Anne Joel, 6, onstage before the song, and they climbed on top of his piano, along with a boy that Joel identified as his booking agent’s grandson. Joel then gave the audience a little bit of background on the tune and launched into the Latin rhythm of his 1980 single.
The lighthearted vibe of the song fitted the situation well, as the kids played around on top and then under the piano with big smiles on their faces. Joel and the audience seemed just as stoked as the kids for the special surprise performance. Della in particular took to the stage like a duck to water and was soon leading the crowd in clapping along to the beat while her dad played the signature piano solo in the bridge. She even took the mic at the end and told the crowd, “Happy summer!”
Joel began his concert residency at the Madison Square Garden on January 27, 2014, and has played monthly concerts at the iconic venue since then. Last week, on July 25, 2024, Joel concluded his long-running residency with his 150th monthly show at the venue. Over the course of the residency, Joel has sold 1.9 million tickets, and demand has never slowed – his final concert was just as packed as the first.
Occasionally Joel used the residency to invite friends, family, and A-list talent to join him onstage. At the final show of the residency on July 25, 2024, Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose dropped in to play Paul McCartney’s “Live and Let Die.” Both Joel and Guns N’ Roses have covered the theme song from the James Bond film previously, so it was a natural choice for them to team up on. Rose only rarely makes appearances outside of his own concerts, so it really shows how much he respects Joel.
It won’t surprise our readers here on The Music Man to know that fans enjoyed seeing Joel’s family moment at his concert in June. Fans added comments such as “This is so wonderful. The dad and the kids, just being as if they were at home in front of a few friends who came over for a visit” and “This is the most adorable thing I’ve seen in a long time. Bless them all.”
