Bethzienna Williams hit the stage on The Voice UK hoping her soulful take on Solomon Burke’s “Cry to Me” would get her a chair turn from Tom Jones. In the end, she got a lot more than she bargained for: after chatting about the song and its appearance in Dirty Dancing, Tiger began singing “Cry to Me,” then got out of his chair as Bethzienna joined him for an impromptu duet. Judging by the look on her face, it was like all Bethzienna’s Christmases came at once in that moment.
The soul power of Tiger’s baritone blending with Bethzienna’s smooth vocals as they held hands made for a legendary The Voice moment. The way Bethzienna was so ecstatic to sing with Tom made the segment feel amazing to watch. The Welsh star delivered a warm energy in his delivery and presence on stage, with his broad smile showing he was loving the spontaneous duet as well. The Music Man has to say Tiger can always be relied upon to bring the thunder on The Voice!
When fan channel Mic Drop! uploaded Bethzienna’s audition and duet with Tom to YouTube, it drew around 1.2 million views within a month.
Tom’s greatest duet on The Voice came when he sang “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” with Jennifer Hudson. Olly Murs had the brilliant idea of having Tiger and J.Hud battle on the show. Seeing two such powerhouse vocalists duke it out was truly a feast for the ears. It was the perfect song choice for the occasion. The song allowed Tom to use the gravitas of his baritone to great effect, while Jennifer went to town with an electrifying lead vocal in the bridge.
Despite their memorable duet, Bethzienna Williams didn’t actually manage to turn Tom Jones’ chair during her The Voice UK audition. Tom did, however, seem to regret that call once he learned she was from Wales.
The Music Man is pleased to report that Bethzienna did manage to turn J.Hud’s chair. The American star was the only coach to turn for Bethzienna in the end. Despite this modest start, Bethzienna progressed quite deep into season eight of The Voice. She made it to the final, where she placed fourth overall.
