No one can dispute the velvety-smooth power of Andrea Bocelli’s voice. He injects so much emotion into his singing it’s easy to believe that he’s singing only to you. However, at a recent concert for the Coronation of King Charles III, he put on an intimate backstage performance just for Katy Perry.
Anyone younger than seventy-five will have been too young to remember the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II or not even born yet. That’s why the coronation of King Charles III was such a big deal. It was a generation-defining moment, so it’s natural that it was marked by a huge concert to celebrate.
The concert boasted a star-studded lineup. Andrea Bocelli performed a duet with Welsh opera star Bryn Terfel, representing Great Britain were Take That (their video is below too), Paloma Faith, Steve Winwood and Olly Murs. There was also representation from America with Commodores frontman Lionel Richie joining his fellow American Idol judge Katy Perry.
Needless to say, the video of this exceptional performance has streaked across YouTube like wildfire. It’s been viewed nearly 136,000 times in just 12 days. It really is Andrea as you’ve never seen him before. The video is even more special because Katy Perry looks on delight like any other starstruck fan, rather than an internally acclaimed singer. She smiles with joy throughout and emotions chase each other across her face.
It’s amazing that the setting looks so mundane. It looks like any office in the world and the keyboard is placed against the wall. Andrea is casually dressed but looking dapper as always in a blue shirt and black trousers. Katy is also dressed far more casually compared to the spectacular gold outfit that she wore for the concert.
It’s hard to imagine sitting less than three feet from such a gifted tenor while he sings and plays the piano. It’s an experience anyone would kill for. He sings O mio babbino caro, one of the most popular opera songs in existence. It was composed by Puccini and translates as Oh My Dear Papa. However, regardless of the song he chose, it would be sublime to sit in a small room and listen to Andrea sing. Katy Perry is a lucky girl!
