Andrea Bocelli is known for his gorgeous singing voice, as rich and deep as the finest wine. He’s also performed stunning duets with Josh Groban, Jennifer Lopez, Christina Aguilera and Ed Sheeran. However, none of these compares to his connection with the woman he loves.
Andrea and Veronica met at a party in 2002. Veronica was working as an actor at the time. Surprisingly, it was not love at first sight. They became friends first, and Veronica became Andrea’s manager. Gradually, their friendship blossomed, and they fell in love. They got married in a beautiful ceremony in Tuscany in 2014 and have been inseparable since.
The duet appeared on Andrea’s DVD, named Cinema, in 2016. When the song begins, he is alone onstage. Then, backed by a jazz band and pianist, he begins to sing Cheek to Cheek in his native Italian. As he reaches the line, “you are the most incredible woman there is,” Veronica appears on stage and takes his hand.
They continue the duet, holding hands and moving together. To add to the drama and romance of the performance, two pairs of ballroom dancers perform onstage throughout. Veronica looks after Andrea throughout, making sure he doesn’t stray into the dancers’ path. It’s clear that taking care of her husband is second nature to her and that they are perfect partners. It’s impossible to watch this video without feeling a glow in your heart.
Their song choice was perfect too. It was written in 1935 by Irving Berlin for the Fred and Ginger musical Top Hat. It’s one of the strengths of a well-written song: it can be translated into a different language and still sound amazing. As Andrea and Veronica serenade each other, it’s hard to believe the song wasn’t written in Italian.
By the end of the performance, Andrea has his arm wrapped snugly around his wife’s waist. They finish by acting out the song and singing cheek to cheek. As the thunderous applause begins, Veronica smiles and kisses him lovingly on the cheek. Definitely a duet you shouldn’t miss.
