Figure skating is an elegant but extraordinarily tricky art to master, requiring a combination of timing, balance, dexterity, and agility. Two skaters who have clearly mastered all of these skills are Alexa Knierim and Brandon Frazier, the US figure skating pair who have previously been declared US champions, world champions, and Olympic gold medalists. Late last year, meanwhile, the pair visited New York to perform at a skating rink’s opening ceremony, and they certainly did not disappoint.
Accompanied by a tension-filled orchestral piece from US rock band Trans-Siberian Orchestra, the pair performed death-defying leaps, tricky footwork, and amazing lifts—all whilst on the ice. Their opening combo actually involved Brandon lying on the ice and lifting Alexa above him, a daring move that made it clear that the pair weren’t there to do things by halves. Dressed in matching purple outfits, they were the picture of elegance for the entirety of their three-and-a-half-minute routine.
The most daring moves of all came towards the end of the pair’s performance in the form of some bold lifts, one of which saw Alexa have her feet wrapped around Brandon’s neck as he spun her around. Another similarly audacious lift saw Brandon balance Alexa in the air above him using just one hand, a move that could have gone horribly wrong if it wasn’t being performed by such talented professionals. “Alexa and Brandon are perfect,” one viewer succinctly commented, and we couldn’t agree more.

According to the official Olympics website, Alexa and Brandon have decided to retire from competitive ice skating – for the time being, anyway.
