As numerous Music Man readers will surely agree, there’s not many things that are cuter than a kid absolutely singing their heart out and having the time of their life whilst they’re doing it. Despite this, we think we’ve found something that tops this on the cuteness scale – a video of Alanis Morissette’s daughter Onyx joining her proud Mum onstage for an adorable duet of her legendary hit ‘Ironic’, filmed live at Alanis’ gig at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville earlier this year.
At first, Alanis told the audience she was bringing someone on stage to help her sing the next song of the set, before introducing her adorable daughter – who just happened to be turning eight years old that day. “Shall we?” the singer asked, before leading the entire arena in a hearty rendition of “happy birthday,” leaving Onyx with the biggest grin on her face. Also onstage were Onyx’s little brother Winter, and their dad Souleye, the hip-hop artist who has been married to Alanis since 2010.
But Onyx’s birthday was about to get even better when the music to ‘Ironic’ started up and Alanis handed her a microphone, encouraging her daughter to sing along. In truth, Onyx absolutely smashed it, putting her heart and soul into the track and sweetly looking at her mother for guidance as she sang. “What a beautiful moment in their lives,” said one of the video’s viewers, while another commented on the strong bond that Onyx and her mother so clearly shared during the performance.

Check out this live performance of ‘Ironic’ at the Prince’s Trust Masters of Music event in 2019, which sees Alanis prove that she can still sing exactly as she could in the 1990s. The performance also features The Foo Fighters’ Taylor Hawkins on drums, whose powerful playing only adds to the song’s bona fide rock credentials and energetic feel.
The two videos mentioned above – as well as many others that can be found on YouTube – show that Alanis Morissette is not only an incredibly talented singer and performer, but also an incredibly sweet person who is clearly very supportive of her children. And who knows, maybe one day Onyx will go on to be a legendary singer just like her mum!
