If you’re a fan of the US singing competition American Idol, you will definitely be familiar with 24-year-old Roman Collins, who has delivered consistently impressive performances on Season 22 of the much-loved show. Hailing from Natchitoches, Louisiana, Collins is a gospel choir director and worship leader whose rich, characterful voice has stunned millions of viewers during his time on the competition, singing tracks like Stevie Wonder’s ‘Living for the City’ and The Beatles’ ‘Come Together.’
However, Collins’s most recent performance on the show is arguably his most special to date. Looking focused and confident as he took to the stage, he performed a soulful cover of James Brown’s ‘It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World’, prompting cheers and screams from the live audience and a broad smile from judge Lionel Richie. With his rich, resonant voice sailing over the band’s dramatic piano and drums, Collins really succeeded in making this legendary track his own.
Collins performed this song because, unbelievably, he had not received enough votes based on his first performance of the night (his gospel-infused cover of Marvin Sapp’s ‘Never Would Have Made It’) to automatically make it through to the next round of the competition. Fortunately, based on this performance, the judges decided to save him from elimination, meaning that he is now one of the final 14 contestants left on the show.
Given the quality of Collins’s previous American Idol performances, this is surely a well-deserved accolade. His cover of Marvin Gaye’s ‘How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)’ for the show’s Hawaii round, for instance, saw viewers praising his distinctive singing style and stage movements. He really brought a soulful touch to the track, with all three of the show’s judges up on their feet and dancing by the time the song was over.
Collins is clearly a hugely talented performer who has bags of energy and passion, as proved by his memorable performances of James Brown’s ‘It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World’, and Marvin Gaye’s ‘How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)’. No doubt, regular viewers of the show are excited to see what he will bring to the next round of this legendary singing competition.
