Nobody could have known just how popular the “Jerusalema Challenge” would become, and I’m sure nobody would have thought members of the Catholic Church spanning from Brazil to Ireland would create their own brilliant entry to the craze, but they have, and it’s awesome!
These women haven’t just been practicing their faith recently…they’ve been learning the moves to a popular dance trend. After videoing their challenge and uploading it to the internet, they quickly became a viral sensation themselves! Watch their dance in the video below.
Who Are They?
Redemptoristines and Redemptorists from the 150-year-old Irish religious order have become the latest viral sensation to enter the “Jerusalema Challenge”. Following the recent high profile entries from the Swiss Police and the Irish Police (gardai) these nimble nuns and priests have definitely given them a run for their money.
What Is The Jerusalema Challenge?
In late 2019 a South African musician called Master KG uploaded a song called “Jerusalema” to YouTube. The song went viral, receiving over 1 million views in its first week online! This sparked a viral dance trend on TikTok and other social media platforms that resulted in an avalanche of videos being uploaded containing the song with people dancing to it. The hashtag #JerusalemaChallenge was born during this process as people challenged their friends to create their own dance videos containing the song.
Nimble Nuns Take On Dance Challenge And Nail It!
Meet the Soli Sisters from Ontario Canada. When these sisters aren’t teaching the catholic faith or caring for the elderly, they’re taking on modern dance challenges just to help raise everyone’s spirits!
They posted the video below to YouTube with the caption, “Sharing our joy and hope in Christ despite a pandemic. Rejoice in the Lord always! Alleluia, Alleluia! Happy Eastertide from the SOLI Sisters!”. Their dance has received over 3.5 million views on YouTube alone and garnered some very positive feedback from people all around the world!

Who Has Entered The Jerusalema Challenge?
There have been potentially millions of videos tagged with the challenge across the world. The song became popular in South Africa at the end of 2019 and took the rest of the world by storm throughout 2020 reaching number 1 in the “US World Digital Song Sales”.
Over the last 12 months, we have seen some brilliant entries to the #JerusalemaChallenge. One of our favorites is a group of children in the slums of Uganda who showcase their brilliant dancing moves and look so happy throughout their amazing performance. The most recent high profile entries have been from the Swiss Police and the Irish Police (gardai) who revived the challenge late last year, directly challenging other police forces across Europe to create their own videos to help raise the public’s spirits. Since then there has been a spate of entries from institutions including Healthcare Workers and Dogs Trust.
