Payne donned a bleached mullet and bright red delivery man outfit for the skit. Along with a fellow ‘delivery man’ from the BBC, the pop star attempted to get randoms to sing along with him in an elevator at the mall. The Music Man readers will find that Payne struck out several times at first, but he soon found some good sports who began singing along with his hits. The reactions of the shoppers in the lift are just hilarious, and the whole segment is just brilliant.
The BBC uploaded Payne’s undercover gag back on November 4, 2017, and it blew up to 4.3 million views. Fans loved the segment, adding comments such as “I can’t stop laughing. This is truly brilliant. Liam with those beautiful notes! He’s just so amazing!” and “I didn’t think he would sing 1D songs and now I’m emotional.” In more recent comments since Payne’s passing at age 31 on October 16, 2024, fans returned to the video to celebrate the life and talents of the English star.
The BBC segment is not only an indication of Payne’s humour and charisma, but it’s also great to hear him sing a cappella without any production. The BBC appearance went live just a few months after Payne’s debut as a solo artist with “Strip That Down” on May 19, 2017. In June of that year, he gave an intense performance of “Strip That Down” to a packed crowd at the Capital Summertime Ball.
