A trio of grandparents proved the entire internet wrong when they resurrected the music of their teens in a spellbinding home performance.
Nobody expected these talented old-timers to create “one of the best Beatles covers” in pop history (according to their top commenters, at least) and rack up an astonishing 1.39 million views from the midst of their living room. Music Man readers can watch the magic unfold in the viral video below…
John Dawson, Dave Egelhofer, and Diane Rosenthal crowd around a single microphone, each armed with either an acoustic guitar or a bass, with Dave introducing the performance with a fun fact about songwriter John Lennon’s inspiration behind creating the tune.
Together, they replicate The Beatles’ original ‘60s atmosphere as they unleash their home rendition of “This Boy,” complete with a perfect three-part vocal harmony that has got viewers feeling overwhelmed with childhood nostalgia.
Dave’s sparkling acoustic chords are balanced by the depth of John’s bass; Diane’s singular strums fleshing out the band’s vintage pop sound as their flawless rendition plays out. Before long, Dave is stealing the lead lyrics as John and Diane join in another spotless harmony, soon melting back into their three-part chorus.
This clip may have been posted two years ago, but new fans will be glad to find out that Folkadelic are still jamming pop hits together, including a cover of The Beatles’ “You Won’t See Me” which made its way to YouTube just last week. They’ve also covered “You’re Going To Lose That Girl,” “If I Needed Someone” and “I’ll Be Back,” as well as Joni Mitchell’s “Carey” and “Free Man In Paris,” amongst many more.
Unfortunately, the band don’t seem to have any studio recordings under their belt just yet. But that only adds to the charm of this home performance: three friends not seeking any form of fame or even Spotify plays, but performing for the pure love of music whilst inspiring millions in the process.
