One perk of living in London is you might just stumble upon a celeb in the most unlikely place. Ricky Gervais in a coffee shop? Stormzy in Soho? Or even Craig David singing his greatest hit, “7 Days,” at a public piano in the Harry Potter-famous King’s Cross St. Pancras station!
The latter has been taking over the internet during the last week, with one video of Craig’s recent impromptu piano performance going viral and amassing nearly 2,000 views in ten days.
With one of the most recognisable voices on the UK R&B scene, Craig’s singing likely drew the huge crowd that can be seen before they even realized it was him and not a dancer’s backing track, or a vocal tape for a busking instrumentalist.
Music Man readers will be stunned, not only by the size of Craig’s crowd, but by how natural his skill is. Backed only by a piano player, this low-key acoustic performance lets Craig’s voice shine – no autotune, simply pure, R&B finesse as the 43-year-old singer glides through the scales and blows his audience away like he’s 19 again.
The crowd clearly can’t believe what they’re witnessing, with masses of them watching through their phones before joining in harmony on Craig’s iconic chorus lyrics.
“7 Days” shot to the top of the UK singles charts back in 2000, appearing on Craig David’s UK #1 debut album, “Born To Do It.” Despite the Southampton-born star releasing a further seven albums in the years following, only one of which (2016’s “Following My Intuition”) matched the #1 spot of his debut, “7 Days” has claimed its place as Craig’s career-defining single; instantly recognizable and perfect for surprising the hordes of people filtering through Kings Cross.
Despite taking a five-year break from music, Craig hasn’t fallen off the scene, making his comeback in 2015 with “When The Bassline Drops” in collaboration with UK grime artist and chat show host Big Narstie. In 2025, Craig will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of his musical debut with an 11-date UK tour alongside Lemar, as well as having a ninth studio album currently in the works.
This isn’t the first time a celeb has rocked up to the St. Pancras International train station to blow passengers away. Alicia Keys, Olivia Rodrigo, Tom Odell, and even Elton John have taken to the keys over the years, but with the cordoned-off performance area, most of these “surprise” shows seem far more planned than Craig’s, proving what a naturally electric star Craig truly is.
