There are many beautiful and moving duets in modern music, many of them recorded by the legendary opera singer Andrea Bocelli. However, few people seem to have seen one of the best, a beautiful rendition of Somos Novios performed with pop star Christina Aguilera.
Somos Novios, which means We Are Lovers in English, was originally recorded by Mexican songwriter Armando Manzanero in 1968. Later, in 1971 Perry Como famously covered it in English under the title It’s Impossible. As an enduring popular song, it’s also been covered by some legendary performers.
These include Elvis Presley, Shirley Bassey, Andy Williams and Mick Hucknall. It’s safe to say that the Bocelli/Aguilera duet had a lot to live up to. But luckily, they both rose to the occasion magnificently. The duet was captured at the Sanremo Music Festival in 2006. It could easily have gone wrong. When the video starts, Andrea is sitting on a stool, looking handsome and polished in a black jacket and grey jeans. Christina looks stunning in a black dress that compliments her blonde hair and red lips perfectly.
Andrea takes the first verse, and the accompanying orchestra takes his performance to another level. It’s beautiful and flowing, like the richest wine. When Christina begins the second verse, the hairs start to rise on your neck. Her voice is so powerful without being harsh, and every note is exquisitely controlled.
Both solo verses are exceptional, but when they start to sing together, it’s impossible not to be awed. It really is a mystery how this duet is not better known as it’s remarkable and deserves to be heard by everyone.
