Earlier this month, 20-year-old Alex Sampson brought some serious retro vibes to America’s Got Talent – and the world loved it. Singing an original love song entitled ‘Pretty Baby’, Alex flew all the way from Atikokan, Ontario to perform, introducing himself as a singer-songwriter. “So many people here,” remarked judge Heidi Klum, “are you nervous?” “I’m a little bit nervous,” the 20-year-old admitted, before accidentally saying that his track was written for Heidi’s fellow judge Sofia Vergara.
Fortunately, Sofia saw the funny side, and Alex then reprieved himself by saying he would write a song for her if he made it to the next round. After such an entertaining introduction, meanwhile, by the time it came to Alex’s performance the pressure was on for him to get it right – and he certainly didn’t disappoint. Standing alone onstage with just a microphone in front of him, his tender, emotive voice rang out over the audience as he delivered a heartfelt rendition of his original song.
By the time he got to the chorus, Alex’s hands were visibly shaking, but cheers were rippling through the audience, who were clearly loving him more with each note he sang. A standing ovation from Simon Cowell followed once the song had finished, and then it was time for the judges to deliver their verdict. “There’s something about you, your presence,” commented an impressed Sofia, while Simon called the young singer “smart” and said the song reminded him of something from a Martin Scorsese film.

Accompanied only by a simple acoustic guitar part, the sweetness and purity of Alex’s voice really shine through, and as such the song is sure to be a hit with Music Man readers. One viewer commented that they could listen to his voice all day, while another predicted that he was going to be a huge star.
As most Music Man readers will no doubt have guessed by now, Alex made it through to the next round of America’s Got Talent, receiving a yes from all four judges. Simon Cowell in particular was clearly a fan, telling Alex that his performance “was very authentic, it was very different.
If this is the lane you want to go down I think it’s very smart, because you separate yourself from what everyone else is doing.” He summed up by saying how much he liked the audition, and with words like that from someone as experienced in the music industry as Simon Cowell, there’s a strong possibility that Alex is going to go far in the competition.
