As of 2024, having the ability to defy gravity is pretty much impossible, right Music Man readers? Well, not quite – as long as you’re a member of Japanese dance collective AIRFOOTWORKS, that is. This incredible four-person dance group graced the America’s Got Talent auditions a few days ago, and they mesmerized viewers with a routine that saw them undertake what looked like gravity-defying moves. “One of the most unique auditions I’ve ever seen” said one viewer, and we couldn’t agree more.
Dressed in identical white and grey outfits and dancing to the 2015 track ‘Where Are U Now’, the group looked decidedly mysterious and enigmatic, grabbing onto a set of bars that sat in the center of the stage as they began their act. Then, the real magic began; first, they elevated themselves into the air using the bars and moved their feet so it looked as if they were floating. Then, one member of the group lifted himself so he was almost horizontal, prompting astonished cheers from the crowd.
And that wasn’t all AIRFOOTWORKS had to offer – when the song hit the chorus they delivered their most incredible move yet, using the bars to gradually lift themselves up whilst doing walking movements with their feet, making it look as though they were literally walking on air. Further near-impossible moves followed, such as when one member used his neck strength to push the bars towards the front of the stage, and when another started doing a crazy hip-hop inspired dance on her hands.
Having watched AIRFOOTWORKS audition, you’d be forgiven for thinking the group are a shoo-in for best dance act of the season – but don’t forget they’re up against some tough competition. There’s aerialist Kelsey Jane, for instance, who stunned the judges a couple of weeks ago with her high-flying routine to Billie Eilish’s ‘What Was I Made For’. “A mix of beauty and risk” is how one perceptive viewer summed up her act, and there’s no doubt that Kelsey already has lots of fans rooting for her.
But despite the fact they’re up against some seriously talented fellow dancers, many AGT viewers would surely agree that AIRFOOTWORKS are one of the most talented, unique, and promising acts on this season of the competition. The fact they were tutored by previous AGT winner Kenichi Ebina probably helps a little too, and as such we’re super excited to see what this highly distinctive, incredibly talented four-piece group have to offer us in the next round.
